Welcome to the Weekly Reads, where I highlight articles that I found on the web and that are focused on career advice, lifestyle, beauty or anything I think would round up as useful for the young, modern, working woman. So get yourself comfortable, pour a cup of coffee and enjoy this week’s reads!
My week has been pretty uneventful; I had a lot of work, which made me feel like all I did was work and sleep – but clearly did not get enough sleep, I would not complain about that. The one thing worth mentioning and that spread from last weekend to this one, is that I have been on a foodie adventure around Berlin.
Finally, after four years here, I tried all – well, many – of the hip places, the real food institutions of Berlin. I queued for two hours to get Mustafa’s Gemuse Kebab – and to be honest it did not disappoint – tried Burgermeister for a second time, and cozied up at a small, local, heart-warming Lebanese Schawarma place. I cannot say enough about how great of a city Berlin is and how everyone can find a place for themselves where they can fit in. But that’s enough of my own adventures, so here are this week’s picks:
Common sense advice. A wise man once said ” Common sense is not so common”, and guess what, he was so right. Here are some pieces of career advice that you can actually use. They are broad and they are common sense pieces and that is why they are so important. We often tend to forget what is important so, sometimes we just need to be reminded of them so that we don’t lose sight of the bigger picture and just get lost in the daily craziness.
Earn it. How to make sure you are doing the work you should be doing. This is a tough one. While I believe that when you start in a new place you need to show a good amount of good will and competence, you also want to make sure you are positioning well and are not taken for granted. You need to show people how to treat you and what kind of projects you want to be taking.
Get inspired. Here are five TED Talks to get you inspired. From Angela Duckworths’s talk on grit and the power of perseverance, to Daniel Pink’s talk on motivation and what can actually motivate others as well.
Wallpapers to get you through the days. Do you want to update your desktop background or your phone’s wallpaper? The Every Girl has downloadable backgrounds for your phone or laptop that are perfect for this time of the year. Now, I do have to say they are nowhere close to what I used to get on IvankaTrump.com – I am so grateful for having saved a few from every season and that I can keep using – but if you are on the hunt for something new, they might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
