Welcome to the Weekly Reads, where I highlight articles that I found on the web and that are focused on career advice, lifestyle, beauty or anything I think would round-up as useful for the young, modern, working woman. So get yourself comfortable, pour a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy this week’s reads!
This week has been such a busy one. I had a client visit to our offices early in the week and we took advantage of the timing to socialize over some Glühwein (mulled wine) at the beautiful Berlin Christmas markets and dinner, followed of course by a full day meeting – which turned out successful. Working, meeting friends as well as the Office Christmas party have filled the remaining of the week and the days and nights simply flew by.
Truth is, I am loving every single bit of December in Berlin this year – the people, the cold, the Christmas markets (hello Glühwein and Kaiserschmarrn – Austrian shredded pancakes) and I am a little tiny regretful for heading to Spain to spend the holidays there. Nonetheless, as I am heading into a very short work week of just two days at the office, I am quite excited about that and I know that once I will land home things will get even better!
How to be a leader. A different perspective on leadership from Fast Company and why knowing how to follow, makes for a good leader.
The best followers make the best leaders because they view the people they lead as their equals–people with their own minds thoughts, ideas, and talents. They value the contributions of each individual employee and their importance to achieving the end goals. They don’t punish employees who question and challenge them–because they know that having people who hold them accountable is an important part of becoming a better leader.
Be prepared. If your annual review is coming up, here are a 9 points you should reflect on before going into that meeting. Know your worth, reflect on where you’re at and where you want to get in the short, mid and long-term so you can steer the discussion towards your own goals.
Real work talk. Here is some real work talk from Abra, the blogger behind The Work Edit. Ever since I have discovered her blog I cannot stop reading it. It’s a must for the career woman; she is real, honest and always shares practical advice, especially when it comes to work wear. Also, her gift guide for the career woman is pretty cool and might just come in handy if you are on the look for a last-minute gift.
Stay healthy. With the flu season here, you might want to do all you can to stay away from getting sick. Here are a few options on how to boost your immune system and I will also share the trick I use. I am generally pretty good at staying away from the flu and while that might just have to do with my immune system, I do have one little secret that helps me boost it. Every morning I drink hot water with fresh ginger, fresh turmeric and the juice of half a lemon every morning. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and it’s high in antioxidants that support the immune system in fighting infection, while ginger is generally used to keep colds, flu, and coughing at bay.
