Weekly Reads – January 14th

Welcome to the Weekly Reads, where I highlight articles that I found on the web and that are focused on career advice, lifestyle, beauty or anything I think would round-up as useful for the young, modern, working woman.

The Weekly Reads are perfect for your Monday morning commute or your first coffee break of the week. So get yourself comfortable, pour a cup of coffee – or tea – and enjoy this week’s reads!

What have I been up to this week

This week has been the first full week back at work . While I know that the months and well, the year ahead are going to be challenging work wise due to the projects I am on, I am focusing on doing my best as well as getting better at managing work-related stress and learning how not to take it personally

On the other hand, I am also doing my best to find the time to finish my assignments and papers for graduate school (as some of you might know, last autumn I started my Master’s degree which I am doing remotely/online). So far this means studying and preparing assignments a few evenings a week, and lately also dedicating the full weekends to writing papers.

The Reads

Good Stress. This post on eustress from Consultant’s Mind is what you need to read if you are dealing with stress at your work. Learn to channel the good stress so you can convert it into productivity, creativity and motivation.

According to Selye’s research, stress is destructive if we cannot overcome it. Only by harnessing it, adapting to it, resolving it, do we actually benefit from it psychologically. Interestingly, your body – hormonally – does not know the difference between good and bad stress. Instead, it is entirely your perception of the stress that matters.

Consumer Trends. These are the five consumer trends that will be shaping the world in 2019 from Trend Watching. I think that no matter the industry you are working in, knowing these trends is super important. This is really good stuff, worth reading.

Advice from the savvy ones. Some advice from Barbara Corcoran on how to successfully ask for a raise. It comes in the form of a short video, but having listened to Barbara’s story on How I Built This with Guy Raz I think she is a great storyteller and I loved watching this.

Decluttering. This article on Digital Decluttering from BBC is something that everyone should read, especially knowing that digital hoarding seems to be linked to the level of stress one feels. Read this, delete the emails and clean up your pictures.

2018 Advice Roundup. Best career advice from Career Contessa with a roundup of all the best articles/books/podcasts/women to follow on Instagram/etc… they recommended throughout 2018.

What I am listening to this week. The Podcast I started to listen to a few weeks ago is Secrets of Wealthy Women by WSJ where successful women share advice on “how to get ahead, reach your goals, and achieve professional success”. Also, I absolutely love the thumbnail of the show!

Thank you for reading and I hope you are having a great start to the work week!
