What a long time it’s been since the last Weekly Reads! But guess what, I am back, and this time back with fresh energy. Just returned from a two week long holiday – this is the first time I take a two week holiday as until now we usually only took one week at a time – and oh, it feels good. We went back to Spain where I got to see my family and friends, relaxed and ate good food all the time. All this, of course, while we wore masks all the time – except when eating and drinking.
The Weekly Reads
Recommended. I just recently had to write a letter of recommendation for a former intern of mine and thought that these tips were useful when drafting one. Being asked for a recommendation letter is great, but make sure you are ready to put in the effort before committing to it and that you also have actually good to say.
Should you accept a promotion without a raise? In these times it can happen that you might find yourself in the situation of having earned and being offered a promotion, however that just in the title and without the corresponding salary raise. With Corona still causing havoc, companies apply all cost-saving measures possible, so if you know a promotion discussion is coming up and your company is tight on money, it’s important to know where you stand before going into the discussion and what your options are.
Beauty on your own terms. Loved watching Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Vogue beauty routine & red lip tutorial. Together with her beauty routine, she delivered such a powerful message to everyone on the importance of self-love when it comes to beauty, as well as using femininity in fighting the power. A highly recommended watch!
“Your ‘Surge Capacity’ Is Depleted. It’s Why You Feel Awful”. Or “how do you adjust to an ever-changing situation where the ‘new normal’ is indefinite uncertainty”? Very good read here shared both by Hitha and Meghan from Wit&Whimsy on our “surge capacity – a collection of adaptive systems — mental and physical — that humans draw on for short-term survival in acutely stressful situations, such as natural disasters”.
+ What I am listening to. I loved the How I Built This episode with Tatcha founder Vicky Tsai. Loved the open and honest conversation on the journey through which she’s been to build the brand and especially the challenges she went through. Definitely worth listening to!
+ What I am reading. I picked up three new fiction books to up my summer reading and ordered another one based on Grace’s recommendations on The Stripe’s Book Club: “Circe“, “Where the Crawdads Sing” and “American Royals“. I also ordered “The Boys Club” which based on the plot review should be right up my alley, and can’t wait to get my hands on it. In the meantime, I am already halfway through “American Royals”.
Thank you for reading and I hope you are having a wonderful start into the new week!
